Blogging as a Business Strategy

Blogging – when done the right way – is a fantastic business strategy for small business. Through blogging, small businesses have the ability to increase their presence online, expand their reach and customer base through viral marketing and growing readership, and create a “big box” presence by contributing content and ideas to the online marketplace.
There are many tactics that comprise an effective blogging strategy, including:
- contributing valuable content that will benefit your readers and demonstrate your value
- linking and connecting with other bloggers and news sources in your industry
- establishing yourself as a though leader in your industry
- commenting on big issues that are garnering media attention and that affect both your industry and the larger economy
And that’s just a start. Successful blogs also offer readers free products and unique resources to gain their loyalty and increase their potential as future customers. Blogging gives you a medium for establishing yourself as an advisor first, before a vendor or service provider. There is a lot more that goes into successful blogging as part of an overall marketing strategy, but it does pay off when done right.
Here is a recent example from wired.com:
“When asked “what is working” for his label, the first thing Amory mentioned was “our own label blog,” which includes posts not just about the label’s own release, but those by other labels as well. Some of it’s not even about music.
“Filling [the Matador blog] with as much interesting stuff, non-musical as well as musical, non-Matador as well as Matador, has doubled our website traffic in the past year and vastly increased business on our webstore,” Amory told Hypebot. “It is also a highly effective method of syndicating promo content.”
“The blog draws traffic, increases sales and gives the label a way to talk about its releases the same way other people are talking about them. What’s not to like?
“This lesson translates to other businesses. If you sell antique dolls on eBay, put together a blog that talks about antique dolls and traffic should start to build which you can redirect towards your eBay sales, as you build a reputation as the go-to place for antique dolls. It’s hardly an earth-shattering strategy, which makes it all the more surprising that so many businesses lack blogs.”
